Leaving Cert English Grinds

What Do the Grinds Cover?
All sessions are 1-to-1, held online over Zoom or Google Meet. There is no fixed syllabus. Each grind is built around where you actually are and what you specifically need to work on. If you are struggling with essay structure, we work on essay structure. If it is poetry analysis, that is where we go.
For Paper 1, that means comprehension strategy for both Question A and Question B, how to plan and write compositions across every format the exam uses (personal essay, short story, speech, discursive essay, feature article), and a clear understanding of how PCLM marking works in practice. Examiners award marks across four categories: Purpose, Coherence, Language, and Mechanics. Most students improve fastest by understanding what each one actually means and how to target it deliberately.

For Paper 2, the focus is on single text essay structure for Shakespeare, novels, and plays; poetry essay technique with proper quote integration and analysis that goes beyond the obvious; and the comparative study across the three modes: General Vision and Viewpoint, Cultural Context, and Theme or Issue. The comparative trips up a lot of students because they treat it like three separate single text questions. It is not. We cover how to write genuinely comparative answers that move between texts confidently.
One of the most important things a grind can do is close the gap between knowing the content and knowing how to answer the question. Students lose marks not because they have not read the texts but because they do not structure their answers to what the examiner is looking for. That structural and strategic understanding is where sessions spend most of their time.
You can bring anything to a session. A mock paper for review. A specific essay you want feedback on. A question type you have been avoiding because you are not sure how to approach it. The session is yours. We will spend the time on whatever gives you the most return. At the end of each session, you leave with a specific action plan: the two or three things to work on before the next session or the exam.

How much do Leaving Cert English grinds cost?
A single 1-to-1 grind is €50. A bundle of 3 grinds with H1 Club membership included is €150. The H1 Club on its own (notes, quizzes, essay feedback, and more) is €49 for the full year.
Are the grinds online or in person?
All grinds are online via Zoom or Google Meet. This means you can attend from anywhere in Ireland. Sessions are recorded if you want to review them afterwards.
What level do you cover?
Higher Level only. The grinds are designed for students targeting H1 to H4 who want to move up a grade band or two.
Can I get help with a specific essay or mock paper?
Yes. You can send an essay or mock paper in advance and we will go through it in detail during the session. Many students use their grind this way.
How long is each grind?
Each session is approximately 60 minutes.
What is the H1 Club?
The H1 Club is a year-round study membership for Leaving Cert English. It includes full notes for every poet and text, essay structures, interactive vocabulary quizzes, essay grading from a teacher, and exam-focused webinars. It costs €49 for the year.
