This is what a Paula Meehan note looks like.
Every prescribed poem and text is written at this level. Direct, examiner-aware, ready to lift into an answer. No filler, no AI-sounding hedging, no analysis that could apply to any poem.
Why this is your strongest opening quote
Use this in any answer about a daughter trying to read her mother’s life. Meehan is being deliberately ambiguous: the unpinning is intimate, almost ritual, but the daughter is on the outside of it. If you’re writing about identity, this is the line. If you’re writing about silence between generations, this is the line. Lift the verb “unpin” into your analysis. Examiners notice precise quoting over paraphrase.

A walkthrough of how students use English Hub to go from blank-page panic to a band-1 answer.
Why students keep coming back.
“I was paying €50 a week for a grind and still felt lost. This gave me a system I could actually follow. My English mock came back as a H2.”
“The structures changed everything. I stopped guessing how to write answers and the marks went up straight away. I genuinely don’t know what I’d do without it.”
“My daughter’s English teacher recommended it. She went from a H4 to a H2 in her mocks. The notes were the difference.”
The grade you want is already on the page. You just haven’t written it yet.
