03Here is why
90%

of a Leaving Cert essay is marked on judgement, not rules.

Purpose, Coherence and Language are 30 marks each. Spelling and grammar are 10. Junior Cycle works the same way, against descriptors instead of a key. Maths has an answer. English has an examiner.

04The shortcut fails

Learning an essay off costs you marks.

Not our opinion. The Chief Examiner’s, on English.

“Formulaic approaches … can hinder candidates by inhibiting their engagement with the terms of the questions and curtailing the expression of independent opinion.”

State Examinations Commission, Chief Examiner’s Report, English

Hope for the best, or force one memorised essay. The scheme is built to catch both.

06It works
“I was paying €50 a week for a grind and still felt lost. This gave me a system I could actually follow. My mock came back as a H2.”
Cian, 6th YearColáiste Iognáid, Galway
“The structures changed everything. I stopped guessing how to write answers and the marks went up straight away.”
Aoife, 6th YearSt. Andrew’s College, Dublin
“My daughter’s English teacher recommended it. She went from a H4 to a H2 in her mocks. The notes were the difference.”
Niamh Walsh, ParentCork
